Kerrigan: Ramirez absence a non-issue

Associated Press

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Manny Ramirez was a no-show at Boston's training camp Wednesday, an absence apparently unrelated to his problems adjusting to the Red Sox last season.

He just had to complete his physical, a spokesman for his agent, Jeff Moorad, said.

Manager Joe Kerrigan wasn't upset that his star missed the first full-squad workout because players don't have to report until Feb. 26 under the collective bargaining agreement.

"It's not an issue," Kerrigan said. "We got a call ahead of time. It's not like it was a surprise. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it."

He said the club was notified before the workout that Ramirez, Rickey Henderson and Juan Diaz would not show up Wednesday. The other 56 players expected in camp were present.

Ramirez, who made a brief appearance in the clubhouse Monday, and Henderson are expected to arrive Thursday. Diaz, a minor league first baseman, is expected Friday.

Henderson, who lives on the West Coast, signed a minor league contract Feb. 13.

"Anytime you get a player who signs as late as he does and he's on the opposite coast, I imagine there's a lot of housecleaning chores he has to do before he comes all the way over and starts spring training," Kerrigan said.

Ramirez played the first season of his eight-year, $160 million contract in 2001 and tailed off toward the end. He was bothered late in the season by a sore wrist and finished with a .306 batting average, 41 homers and 125 RBI in 142 games.

He said he was uncomfortable in the clubhouse, which is smaller than the one he had in Cleveland where he could avoid reporters.

Infielder Carlos Baerga, who played with Ramirez in Cleveland, is with Boston on a minor league contract.

"He was real happy that I was back," Baerga said. "I said to him, `I'm going to be there but I'm going to be on top of you. I want you to be the MVP."'

Ramirez underwent his team physical on Monday. He also planned to have a physical for the company that insures his contract that day, but it was canceled because of the Presidents' Day holiday, team spokesman Kevin Shea said.

He showed up at the clubhouse Monday and spoke briefly with Kerrigan.

"Manny looks strong, in great shape," Kerrigan said then.
