Flags will be on caps for Memorial Day, 4th of July

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- American flag patches will be worn on the jackets of all 30 major league teams this season.

"God Bless America" will be sung during the seventh-inning stretch in each team's first homestand of the season, the commissioner's office said Wednesday, an extension of the practice that began after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

After baseball resumed Sept. 17 following a six-day break, teams had American flags on their uniforms and caps. This year, they will be on the caps during games on Memorial Day weekend and the Fourth of July.

A special baseball logo, with the Stars and Stripes in the background of the silhouetted batter, will appear on fields on Memorial Day weekend and the Fourth of July, and team logos with the Stars and Stripes will be used on the bases and on-deck circles during those holidays.

In addition, an opening-day logo will be on the field behind home plate, on the bases and the on-deck circles during each team's first homestand.

Toronto and Montreal will have Canadian versions, and the Expos' version will be in French.
