Cardinals sign Oliver to minor league deal

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- The St. Louis Cardinals demoted left-hander Bud Smith to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday to make room for newly acquired pitcher Chuck Finley.

Smith (1-5) had a 6.94 ERA in 11 appearances, including 10 starts. He gave up eight runs, nine hits and Adam Hyzdu's grand slam Friday night, but did not get a decision in St. Louis' 12-9 loss at Pittsburgh.

Smith has been a disappointment after pitching a no-hitter as a rookie last season and going 6-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 16 games. He has lost six of seven decisions since last year.

The Cardinals needed to clear a roster spot for Finley, who was acquired from Cleveland for minor league outfielder Luis Garcia and a player to be named Friday.

Finley will make his Cardinals debut Sunday, with Andy Benes, who was to start that day, now expected to start Wednesday in San Francisco.

The Cardinals also signed left-hander Darren Oliver to a minor league contract and assigned him to Memphis. Oliver, 3-13 with St. Louis in 1998-99, was released last month by Boston with a 4-5 record and a 4.66 ERA in 14 games.

The 31-year-old Oliver is 71-65 in his career with a 5.02 ERA in 246 games.
