NEW YORK -- Yankees closer Mariano Rivera walked off the mound after throwing only six pitches against the Boston Red Sox because of tightness in his right shoulder Saturday.
"I'll be all right, I think,'' he said after a 9-8 win in 11 innings. "They'll decide tomorrow what we're going to do. I don't know what. They haven't told me yet. No pain, just tight. I have had this before.''
Yankees manager Joe Torre was worried, naturally.
"There's no question it's a matter of concern,'' Torre said. "But this is not something new with Mo. He's had this before and usually been able to work through it.''
New York led 6-3 when Rivera was summoned in the eighth inning with no outs and runners on second and third.
Rivera struck out Manny Ramirez with a fastball, but allowed a two-run single to Jason Varitek. After the count went to 2-1 on Shea Hillenbrand, Torre and a trainer bolted from the dugout to the mound.
Following a brief discussion, Rivera was pulled. The Yankees' career saves leader slowly walked back to the bench with his hands at his side, accompanied by a trainer.
Rivera was put on the DL for the second time in his career on June 10 because of a strained right groin. He returned on June 25.
Last Sunday in Cleveland, Rivera gave up a game-winning, two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to Bill Selby. Rivera came back to earn saves Tuesday at Toronto and Thursday against Detroit. |
