CINCINNATI -- Snubbed by Kenny Rogers, the Cincinnati Reds went to a backup plan Tuesday and acquired right-hander Brian Moehler from the Detroit Tigers in a five-player trade. The 30-year-old Moehler has made only three starts this season in a comeback from major shoulder surgery last year. He was driving from Detroit to Cincinnati and was expected to start Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds also acquired infielder Matt Boone, a son of manager Bob Boone, in exchange for infielder David Espinosa and two players to be named. The Tigers included cash to cover part of Moehler's salary for the rest of the season. The trade was made a few hours after Rogers invoked the no-trade clause in his contract and blocked a trade from the Texas Rangers to the Reds. Cincinnati was willing to give up Espinosa and two other minor leaguers to add Rogers to their rotation. Separately, the Reds extended their manager's contract for another season, keeping Boone in charge when the club moves into a new ballpark in 2003. |
