An animal-rights group wants the Milwaukee Brewers to expand their traditional wiener race by adding a vegetarian sausage. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals asked the Brewers to add a soy sausage to the bratwurst, hot dog, Polish sausage and Italian sausage that compete in the race during games. The sausage race features four people dressed in costumes running a race on the warning track between the sixth and seventh innings. PETA wrote to Brewers owner Wendy Selig-Prieb asking for the addition. Dan Shannon, PETA's sports campaign coordinator, said it makes sense to include a soy dog considering the team has begun to sell veggie dogs at the ballpark. But on Friday, Brewers spokesman Jon Greenberg said the team has no plans to bring in another sausage. "The sausage race here is tradition," Greenberg told ESPN.com. "The ivy at Wrigley Field, the monuments at Yankee Stadium, the singing during the seventh inning stretch and the rolling out of the barrel here in Milwaukee. Those are all things you don't want to mess with and so we will be keeping the sausage race as is with the four sausages thrilling fans for years to come at Miller Park." |
