NEW ORLEANS -- Toe Nash, a high school dropout signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, was released from jail Friday after pleading guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Nash, 20, was facing life in prison on three counts of aggravated rape, according to Arthur Lemann IV, Nash's lawyer.
"They agreed to drop all the current charges for him pleading to carnal knowledge,'' Lemann said. "He unfortunately made a mistake. ... It worked out well.''
Prosecutors also dropped theft charges, Lemann said.
Nash served over eight months in jail in Ascension Parish. He will remain on probation for five years, Lemann said.
"It's a great opportunity for him not only to move on with his baseball career but with his life,'' his agent, Larry Reynolds, said.
Last season, Nash played for the Princeton Devil Rays of the Appalachian League in West Virginia, batting .240 in 47 games with eight homers and 29 RBI. Princeton general manager Jim Holland said the team had no problems with Nash's behavior.
Reynolds was uncertain about Nash's future prospects.
"He's the property of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays right now. They will have to decide if they want him to play or not next year,'' Reynolds said.
The Devil Rays aren't sure. "We were made aware that he was released today and have asked for the official documents outlining what it is he is guilty of,'' Tampa Bay general manager Chuck LaMar said. "When we receive that information, we will make an immediate decision regarding his future with our organization.''
