ST. LOUIS -- Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez separated his left shoulder in a collision Monday night, a potentially major blow to the World Series champions.
There was no immediate word on how long Gonzalez, who got the hit that won the championship last year, would be sidelined. The Diamondbacks said he would be evaluated Tuesday.
Gonzalez was hurt when he tried to make a diving catch on Tino Martinez's bloop double in the fourth inning at St. Louis. Shortstop Tony Womack's knee hit Gonzalez's shoulder, and Womack cartwheeled over his teammate.
Gonzalez, who is batting .288 with 28 home runs and 103 RBI, left the field holding his arm to his side.
The Diamondbacks were trying to clinch a playoff spot with a victory over the Cardinals.
Last season, Gonzalez blooped a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the World Series and give Arizona the title.
An inning before Gonzalez was injured, Arizona third baseman Chris Donnels left with a mild concussion after hurting himself while making a play.
Donnels landed awkwardly after making a lunging throw to first on Eli Marrero's bunt single. He finished the inning but was removed for pinch-hitter Alex Cintron.
Donnels was playing in place of Matt Williams, who was held out with a tight quadriceps. |
