LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Barry Bonds and Mike Piazza won their 10th Silver Slugger awards Tuesday.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa and Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez were picked for a sixth time to the lists announced by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., the maker of Louisville Sluggers. The selections, honoring the best offensive players at each position in each league, were voted on by major league managers and coaches. Bonds led the majors with a .370 average and had 46 home runs, 110 RBIs and a record 198 walks. He helped the San Francisco Giants reach the World Series, where they lost in seven games to Anaheim. The 38-year-old Bonds hit .356 with eight homers, 16 RBIs and 27 walks in the postseason. Piazza hit .280 with 33 homers and 98 RBI for the New York Mets. Colorado first baseman Todd Helton, San Francisco second baseman Jeff Kent, St. Louis shortstop Edgar Renteria, Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen, Montreal outfielder Vladimir Guerrero and Colorado pitcher Mike Hampton completed the National League list. Four Yankees made the AL squad: first baseman Jason Giambi, second baseman Alfonso Soriano, outfielder Bernie Williams and catcher Jorge Posada. Also honored were Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez, White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez, Anaheim outfielder Garret Anderson and Boston designated hitter Manny Ramirez. |
