Report: Two men planned to kidnap Pedro's father

ESPN.com news services

The father of Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez reportedly was the target of a kidnapping attempt in the Dominican Republic.

According to a story in Monday's Ultima Hora de Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic police arrested two men who allegedly were planning to kidnap Pablo Jaime Martinez. The suspects are reportedly natives of Manoguayabo, the birthplace of Pedro Martinez.

Two employees of a bakery owned by the Martinez brothers, on the San Miguel Street in Manoguayabo, had reportedly been planning to kidnap Pablo Jaime Martinez, police charged. The plan reportedly consisted of disarming and choking the bodyguards by grabbing them from behind. After overpowering the guards, the suspects planned on bringing the older Martinez to another location outside the city where they would ask for a high sum of money as ransom.

Ramon Martinez, Pedro's older brother who pitched for the Red Sox and Dodgers before retiring, confirmed to the newspaper that he received information that two people asked for a large sum of money for his father.

"Thanks to the cooperation of people who will remain unnamed, and thanks to God, my father is well, and he wasn't kidnapped," he told the newspaper.
