Schedule calls for game, inductions in different months

Associated Press

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Baseball's annual Hall of Fame game and the induction ceremonies will take place on different weekends for the first time.

The exhibition game between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay will be played June 16 and the induction will take place July 27. The change was needed because of a conflict with the major league schedule.

Results of the vote by the Baseball Writers' Association of America will be announced Tuesday. Eddie Murray and Gary Carter are among the leading candidates on the 33-player ballot.

The vote by the veterans' committee will be announced Feb. 26. That ballot includes former Players' Association head Marvin Miller and former commissioner Bowie Kuhn, along with Bobby Bonds, Rocky Colavito, Curt Flood, Gil Hodges, Ted Kluszewski, Roger Maris, Thurman Munson, Don Newcombe, Allie Reynolds, Joe Torre and Maury Wills.

The veterans' committee was revised and now includes 84 voters: 82 Hall of Famers -- 58 players, 13 broadcasters and 11 writers -- and two members of the former veterans' committee whose terms have not yet expired.

The previous veterans' committee included about 15 voters who were former players and executives.
