Angels bring back Fullmer with one-year deal

Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Brad Fullmer agreed Monday to a $1 million, one-year contract with the Anaheim Angels, who had allowed him to become a free agent last month.

Fullmer hit .289 with 35 doubles, six triples, 19 homers and 49 RBI in 130 games last season. The left-handed batter was the Angels' starting designated hitter in 89 games, and also started 27 games at first base.

A native of nearby Chatsworth, Fullmer played in 12 of the Angels' 16 postseason games, hitting .294 with three doubles, one homer and five RBI.

When the decision was made to not offer Fullmer a contract, Angels general manager Bill Stoneman said the move was made for financial reasons and didn't rule out signing Fullmer at a lower cost.

"He was really happy to come here, he enjoyed his season here and wanted to come back,'' Stoneman said. "He made that very clear, certainly his agent made that very clear. He was very aggressive, trying to make sure the door was open here. The aggression of the agent I'm sure was at the behest of the client.''

Stoneman said there were discussions with other potential designated hitters.

"We discussed salary ranges with a number of them, too,'' he said. "In the end, we decided to go after Brad. It was really more in our hands. He was part of last year's club, we were looking for a left-handed bat, a very aggressive guy, a very good baserunner.''

Fullmer, who would have been eligible for salary arbitration if Anaheim had offered a contract before Dec. 20, earned $3.75 million last season. He was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays last Jan. 17 -- his 27th birthday -- for right-hander Brian Cooper.

Fullmer played for the Montreal Expos from 1997 to 1999 and the Blue Jays in 2000 and 2001. He has a .282 career average in 668 games with 94 homers and 374 RBIs. He had his best year with the Blue Jays in 2000, hitting .295 with 32 homers and 104 RBI.
