Astros' Hernandez trying to get out of Venezuela

ESPN.com news services

The turmoil in Venezuela might hamper Astros starter Carlos Hernandez from being ready for the start of spring training.

Hernandez, who has been plagued the past two seasons by shoulder problems, has had another setback and will be examined by orthopedist Dr. James Andrews as soon as he returns to the United States, The Houston Chronicle reported Friday.

However, the first problem is getting him a visa so he can leave Venezuela.

"We're in the process of trying to get him out of Venezuela to get him examined by Dr. Andrews in Birmingham," Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker told the newspaper. "It's an ongoing concern with Carlos because of his history. We knew when we attempted to rehab him there were certainly risks involved. This is not a positive. This is certainly not encouraging."

Surgery has not been ruled out to correct Hernandez's shoulder problems. He was injured while working out at the Astros' Venezuelan baseball academy over the holidays, according to the newspaper.

"Because of the political situation in Venezuela, we're having a hard time obtaining visas," Hunsicker said. "I can't really say when (Hernandez will) be here."

The Astros' pitchers and catchers are expected to report to spring training Feb. 15.
