CAROLINA, Puerto Rico -- David Ortiz hit a three-run homer and the Dominican Republic beat Mexico 11-4 Thursday in the Caribbean Series.
At night, Chris Rojas pitched four-hit ball for six innings as the Mayaguez Indians beat the Caguas Creoles 1-0 in a matchup of teams from Puerto Rico.
Mayaguez leads the tournament with a 5-0 record and the Dominicans are 4-1. The two leaders play Friday, and Mayaguez can clinch the championship with a victory. If the Dominicans win, they'll play a tiebreaker Saturday.
Mayaguez extended its shutout streak to 35 innings as relievers Hector Mercado and Jason Childers combined to finish with three hitless innings.
Javier Valentin drove in the only run with a run-scoring single that scored his brother, Jose Valentin.
Behind Ortiz and Miguel Tejada, the Dominicans won easily.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, Luis Polonia singled and Tejada walked. Ortiz followed with a home run off Alejandro Romero for a 3-0 lead.
Ortiz, who has homered twice in the tournament, also doubled, singled and walked twice.
With two outs in the fifth, Tejada doubled and Ortiz was intentionally walked. Tony Batista delivered a two-run double that made it 5-1.
Batista then scored on a double by Felix Jose, and Raul Mondesi added a run-scoring single. Mondesi drove in another run in the seventh.
Tejada added a two-run triple and Ortiz hit a run-scoring single in the eighth. |
