TAMPA, Fla. -- Second baseman Alfonso Soriano would be interested in a multiyear contract if the New York Yankees want to discuss a long-term deal.
The Yankees renewed Soriano's contract Tuesday at $800,000, a raise of $130,000. After this season, he becomes eligible for salary arbitration.
"I don't worry about it," Soriano said Wednesday. "The Yankees want, I'll talk. There's nothing I can do. That's baseball. It's not only me."
Soriano hit .300 with 39 homers, 41 steals and 102 RBI in 156 games last year, his second full major league season. He has been slowed by shoulder problems this spring.
"It's coming around," said Soriano, who went 1-for-2 in Wednesday's 12-2 loss to Atlanta. "It's better."
General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday the sides might discuss a multiyear deal at a future date. A drawback is that a multiyear contract agreed to this year would substantially increase the team's luxury tax payment, which is based on the average annual values of contracts. |
