Dodgers batting coach breaks eight ribs

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Los Angeles Dodgers batting coach Jack Clark broke eight ribs and had severe cuts to his face and head after his motorcycle crashed Sunday on the way to Bank One Ballpark.

Clark was hospitalized in intensive care and was listed in stable condition, having been upgraded from critical.

It was not known when Clark would be able to leave the hospital or return to the team.

The 47-year-old former major league All-Star was not wearing a helmet when the three-vehicle accident occurred near downtown shortly before noon. Arizona law does not require a helmet, said Steve Volden, spokesman for the state's department of public safety.

The Dodgers play their season opener Monday at Arizona against the Diamondbacks. Clark was on his way to the stadium for a workout when he crashed.

Several members of the Dodgers visited Clark after practice ended.

"We were troubled by his appearance and evident discomfort and pain,'' Dodgers vice president Derrick Hall said.

Volden said a minivan made an unsafe lane change and hit a car, which collided with Clark's motorcycle. The minivan driver was cited, Volden said.
