Arturo Moreno, who made his wealth in the outdoor advertising business, has become a leading candidate to buy the Anaheim Angels, the Los Angeles Times reported on Friday. Sources told the newspaper that Moreno has surpassed real estate developer Frank McCourt and the Nederlanders (James and Robert) as the top candidate to buy the Angels from Walt Disney Co. Negotiations between Moreno and Disney have gotten "feverish," a source told the newspaper. "He's definitely the No. 1 guy," a source told the Times. Moreno could not be reached for comment by the Times. According to the newspaper, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig will meet with Moreno soon to discuss the possible sale of the World Series champs. Moreno has a minority share in the Phoenix Suns, and used to have a small share of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jerry Colangelo, the managing general partner of the Diamondbacks and Suns, confirmed Thursday to the Times that Moreno remains an investor in the Suns. Colangelo told the newspaper that Moreno has not discussed with him the potential purchase of the Angels. "I would not be surprised," Colangelo told the newspaper. "He has expressed to me a real interest in owning a team." |
