Outfielder has cartilage removed from right knee

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Oakland Athletics outfielder Jermaine Dye had surgery Tuesday to remove floating cartilage in his right knee.

Doctors didn't find any other damage in the knee during the 20-minute procedure, so Dye should need three-to-five weeks to recover, A's trainer Larry Davis said. Dye will begin rehabilitation Wednesday with ice and electronic stimulation.

"The key is when can you start impact conditioning. That depends on how he feels," Davis said before the A's began a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox. "He's a young man. We anticipate a swift recovery."

Dye was placed on the disabled list Saturday, two days after twisting his knee on the outfield warning track. The cartilage in his knee was completely torn away, but Davis said that won't affect Dye's playing ability.

"It's always nice to have, but there are a lot of people in the world who don't have it," Davis said. "There are a lot of players with no cartilage in their knees at all."

Dye was hitting .189 with one home run and six RBI before he was injured.
