HOUSTON -- A judge Wednesday issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting former Astros shortstop Julio Lugo from going within 200 feet of his wife, who accused him of punching her in the mouth and banging her head against a car window last month. Lugo, 27, is charged with an assault-family violence charge, a Class A misdemeanor. He was arrested April 30, following the Astros 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. The team quickly released Lugo. The restraining order also prohibits Lugo from going near the couple's home or threatening his wife in any way. The order remains in place for 61 days, but during that time Mabel Lugo can request an order which lasts for two years. Criminal County Court-at-Law Judge Michael Peters set a July trial date for Lugo, who has maintained his innocence. Lugo has been designated for assignment, meaning the Astros have 10 days to release him, trade him or send him to the minors. If convicted, he could face up to a year in prison and a $4,000 fine. |
