Reliever had arthroscopic surgery on shoulder

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Yankees reliever Steve Karsay had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.

Karsay had a partial tear of his rotator cuff repaired by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. The Yankees said Karsay is expected to be ready to pitch by spring training next year.

Karsay, who has been out all season because of the injury, visited Andrews in Birmingham on Monday, after having a setback in his rehabilitation last week.

He was 6-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 12 saves as the team's primary right-handed setup man last season, his first with the Yankees.

Karsay has a 31-38 record and 3.88 ERA in nine major league seasons.
