Astacio, Strickland likely out for rest of season

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Mets starter Pedro Astacio and reliever Scott Strickland will both likely have surgery in the next two weeks, ending the right-handers' seasons.

Astacio went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He will see Angels team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday and possibly have surgery the following day. Astacio was treated by Yocum in 2001 when inflammation in his right shoulder cut short his year with the Houston Astros on Aug. 23.

Astacio began the season on the disabled list with tendinitis in the right shoulder before being activated April 24. He went 3-2 with a 7.36 ERA in seven starts before returning to the DL. Before Sunday, the Mets had said the tendinitis was unrelated to the labrum problem Astacio had two years ago.

The Mets are confident that Astacio, who is signed through this season, will make a full recovery -- which usually takes six months to a year.

"It's certainly one he's expected to come back from,'' general manager Steve Phillips said before Wednesday night's game against Milwaukee was rained out.

Strickland also will see Dr. Yocum when the Mets are in Anaheim from June 13-15 and could have ligament-replacement surgery the following Tuesday.

Strickland, (0-2) with an 2.25 ERA in 19 appearances, has been on the DL since May 11 with a strained right groin and thinks the leg injury is what caused the stress on his right elbow. He said that because of the groin problem, he couldn't drive off the mound, which forced him to overthrow.

"This would have been a 15-day thing,'' Strickland said of his groin injury. "Now I hurt my elbow because of the groin and now it's going to be a year.''

Strickland will have the similar surgery to that of 42-year-old teammate John Franco. Yocum operated on the left-handed in May 2002 and Franco returned to the mound May 30.

The loss of Strickland in the bullpen is compounded by injuries to right-hander Grant Roberts (tendinitis in right shoulder) and lefty Mike Stanton (inflammation of the left knee).

Roberts has been eligible to return from since May 28, but he also has developed a muscular problem under his arm and is out indefinitely. Stanton can return on Friday.
