Fullmer ruptures right knee running out a grounder

Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. Anaheim Angels designated hitter Brad Fullmer ruptured the patella tendon in his right knee running out a grounder in Thursday night's 10-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners and will undergo season-ending surgery.

Fullmer, who took a pay cut of more than $2 million dollars to re-sign with the defending World Series champions as a free agent, was injured on a close play at first base when he hit the bag hard with his left foot and tumbled over. He was carried off the field by trainers Ned Bergert and Rick Smith and to the clubhouse, where he was examined by team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Fullmer was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will have surgery in a couple of days.

Teammate Jarrod Washburn wasn't surprised at the way Fullmer got injured -- hustling all out late in a game with his team down by four runs.

"It's very typical of the way he plays the game,'' Washburn said after losing his fourth straight start.

"That's the way our whole team plays the game. That's how we were able to win the World Series. We play hard every out of every game no matter what the score is. Losing a guy like Fullmer is going to be a big loss for us. He's not going to be an easy guy to replace.''

Fullmer was hitting .339 this month, after leading all major leaguers with a .392 average in April. He has nine home runs and 35 RBI.

The Angels recalled infielder Chone Figgins from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Fullmer on the roster.
