Rockies still probing escalator accident

Associated Press

DENVER -- Inspectors spent Monday at Coors Field searching for more clues to tell them what caused an escalator to malfunction and throw dozens of fans on top of each other after a baseball game last week.

Colorado Rockies spokesman Jay Alves said he wasn't sure whether the stadium's seven escalators would be running when the team returns from a road trip Wednesday to host the San Francisco Giants.

"We have to wait until these inspections are completed before we can say anything more on that,'' Alves said.

The escalators were shut down after last Wednesday's accident injured 32 people. Witnesses said a three-story escalator suddenly sped up after a post-game fireworks show, dumping screaming fans into a pile.

City inspectors found no problems in a check of the escalator last month, said Julius Zsako of Denver's Community Planning and Development Agency, which oversees the inspections.
