ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays designated hitter Ben Grieve was hospitalized Friday night after tests found a small blood clot in his right upper arm.
A team spokesman said Grieve was in good condition at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg and would be held overnight. He will be re-evaluated Saturday. "His arm was real swollen when he came to the ballpark," Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said. "We sent him to the hospital right away for exams and X-rays." After the Devil Rays beat the Texas Rangers 2-0 Friday night, Grieve was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Outfielder Matt Diaz was called up from Triple-A Durham. Grieve was originally in the starting lineup Friday night, but was scratched. He came onto the field dressed for batting practice, but reported discomfort in the arm and was immediately sent back to the clubhouse. | ||||||
