Mike Hampton ended Braves teammate Greg Maddux's record 13-year Gold Glove winning streak as the National League's best fielding pitcher, and St. Louis Cardinals won four of nine awards for the second straight year Wednesday.
Pitcher Jim Kaat holds the overall record with 16 Gold Gloves. Maddux has 10 Gold Gloves as a Brave.
Outfielder Jim Edmonds, third baseman Scott Rolen, shortstop Edgar Renteria and catcher Mike Matheny were winners. Matheny, a two-time winner, did not win last year. Second baseman Fernando Vina gave St. Louis four winners last season.
Edmonds has won four straight NL Gold Gloves after winning three in the American League with Anaheim. Rolen won for the fourth straight year and fifth time overall. Renteria, despite tying for sixth among shortstops in fielding percentage, was a repeat winner.
Braves outfielder Andruw Jones won his sixth Gold Glove in a row.
Other winners were first baseman Derrek Lee and second baseman Luis Castillo of the world champion Florida Marlins, and Giants outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. Cruz had 18 assists, second most in the NL behind Houston's Richard Hidalgo.
Gold Gloves, presented since 1957 by St. Louis-based Rawlings,
are voted on by managers and coaches before the end of the regular
season. They may not select players on their own teams, and they
vote only for players in their own league.
AL Gold Glove winners were announced Tuesday.
