Ex-Mariner would start over Clark

The Yankees were close to signing free-agent first baseman John Olerud. Manager Joe Torre said Olerud should arrive in New York on Sunday night and that he will need some time to get back
into game shape.

Olerud was released July 23 by the Seattle Mariners. The former
AL batting champion was hitting .245 with five homers and 22 RBIs
in 77 games.

"He's going to get a chance to play," Torre said.

Once Olerud is ready, he will start and Tony Clark will assume
the backup role, Torre said.

Clark had been starting because Giambi is on the disabled list
with a benign tumor.
