OTTAWA -- Ernie Whitt was selected Monday to manage Canada's team at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in March.
The 53-year-old Whitt is the Toronto Blue Jays' bench coach and
managed Canada to a second-place finish in a regional Olympic
qualifier this month to advance to the Americas Olympic qualifier
next year in Cuba. He has managed Canada since 1999, when it won a
bronze medal at the Pan American Games, and guided Canada to a
fourth-place finish in last year's Athens Olympics.
He played in the major leagues for 15 years for Boston, Toronto,
Atlanta and Baltimore. Canada is in a first-round group with the
United States, Mexico and South Africa.
