Shoulder surgery could sideline Speier for the season

DENVER -- Colorado Rockies right-handed pitcher Ryan Speier
underwent surgery Wednesday for a torn labrum in his right shoulder
that could keep him out the entire season.

"This is an unfortunate injury for Ryan," team executive vice
president and general manager Dan O'Dowd said in a statement. A
team spokesman did not return a phone call seeking details of how
Speier suffered the injury, which is not unusual for a pitcher.

Speier, 26, posted a 3.65 ERA over 22 appearances in his rookie
year last season, improving that ERA to 1.54 over his last nine
appearances. Speier did not allow a home run in 24.2 innings
