SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Mets slugger Carlos Delgado could be in Puerto Rico for his son's birth, rather than in St. Louis for the start of New York's season.
"My child comes first," he told the newspaper El Nuevo Dia.
Delgado's wife, Betzaida Garcia, has a due date of April 1 -- Opening Day for the Mets.
The baby boy, to be named Carlos Antonio, will be the couple's first child.
The Mets said Tuesday they were aware of the pregnancy.
"I will express to the Mets my intentions to be there," Delgado said Thursday. "Like any other father in the world, I want to be there for that great day."
Delgado, who had surgery on his left arm in October, hit .265 with 38 homers and 114 RBIs in his first season with the Mets. He then batted .351 with four homers and 11 RBIs in the postseason. He started taking swings and soft tossing this week.
"I don't anticipate any problems between now and spring training," he said.
