Ichiro third fastest in MLB history to 1,500 hits

SEATTLE -- Ichiro Suzuki became the third-fastest player in
major league history to reach 1,500 hits when he singled in the
second inning Sunday against Oakland's Lenny DiNardo.

Suzuki got his 1,500th hit in his 1,060th game. Only Al Simmons
(1,040) and George Sisler (1,048) reached the mark quicker,
according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Ty Cobb is fourth at 1,070.

"He's a marvelous player and what I enjoy is watching him have
fun," Seattle manager John McLaren said.

Suzuki finished 2-for-5 Sunday and now has 1,501 hits in his
career. He had 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix in Japan's
Pacific League.

"Unless I get to 1,500, I can't get 1,501. So in that sense,
all numbers are important to me," Suzuki said.
