NEW YORK -- Top draft picks Pedro Alvarez and Eric Hosmer are free to start working out with their new teams after Major League Baseball and the players' union reached agreement Tuesday on their status.
Alvarez, a power-hitting third baseman, was taken No. 2 overall by Pittsburgh in June. Hosmer, a big first baseman, was picked No. 3 by Kansas City.
MLB has said it extended the Aug. 15 midnight deadline for draft picks to sign, and the union filed a grievance.
Alvarez agreed to a minor league deal, but later refused to sign his contract. Hosmer did not contest his minor league contract.
