Astros sign OF Michaels to $750K deal

HOUSTON -- Outfielder Jason Michaels and the Houston Astros agreed Monday to a $750,000, one-year contract.

Michaels hit .224 with eight home runs and 53 RBIs in 123 games with Cleveland and Pittsburgh last season. He was 9-for-45 (.200) as pinch-hitter with 13 RBIs, third-most in the major leagues.

The 32-year-old played all three outfield positions last season.

He can earn an additional $750,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $25,000 for 200, $50,000 for 225, $75,000 for 250, $125,000 each for 275, 300, 325 and 375, and $100,000 for 400.
