Tight back forces Griffey to DH

SEATTLE -- Ken Griffey Jr. will start at designated hitter rather than in right field in the Seattle Mariners' home opener against the Los Angeles Angels because of a tight back.

Tuesday's game is Griffey's 12th home opener with the Mariners for Griffey but his first in a decade.

Griffey began his big league career with Seattle as a 19-year-old in 1989 and was traded to his hometown Cincinnati Reds before the 2000 season. He was dealt to the Chicago White Sox last July and signed with the Mariners as a free agent.

Now 39, Griffey is off to a 2-for-15 start with one home run.
