SAN DIEGO -- Chris Young will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday due to inflammation in his right shoulder, meaning the top two pitchers for the struggling San Diego Padres will be out of action.
The 6-foot-10 Young was hit hard in losing his last four starts, including allowing four home runs to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 9.
He knew he would miss at least his scheduled start Friday night against the Oakland A's.
Ace Jake Peavy was placed on the DL on Saturday, a day after learning he would be sidelined at least a month because of a strained tendon behind his right ankle.
"It stinks. I hate that. I hate that for the guys," Young said. "But I think it got to a point where my performance was hurting the team more than helping, and I needed to get this better so I could have some impact when I do come back."
Young (4-6, 5.21 ERA) had a second cortisone shot on Wednesday night.
"It definitely feels a little bit better than the past three days, so I'm encouraged by that," Young said.
But he's not sure how long it will take for the ailment to go away, although the Padres are encouraged that an MRI showed no structural damage.
"I've never had anything like this so it's really hard for me to guess what the recovery timetable's going to be," he said. "Hopefully it will continue to respond to the cortisone injections and the treatment that we're doing. I think it was a really good sign that structurally everything looked good with the MRI. But the inflammation still has to calm down, And if it doesn't calm down, it's still going to be painful."
The move will be retroactive to Monday, a day after Young lost 6-0 at Anaheim.
"It shouldn't be a lengthy rehab, at this point," manager Bud Black said. "But we've still got to see how the soreness resolves itself in the next week or so."
Young missed more than two months last year after being hit in the face by Albert Pujols' line drive on May 21, breaking his nose and fracturing his skull. He returned in late July.
Being without his top two pitchers is "going to be tough," Black said. "It's not a scenario that you look forward to. Here again, guys are going to be getting an opportunity to see what they can do as major league pitchers."
Left-hander Wade LeBlanc will be recalled from Triple-A Portland to start on Friday night and Walter Silva is a strong candidate to be recalled from the Beavers to start Saturday night.
The Padres have lost five straight and 13 of 17 going into Thursday's game against Seattle, as well as a major league-record 13 straight interleague games.
