ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Yankees catcher Jorge Posada has no broken bones in his foot after fouling a ball off his toes.
New York manager Joe Girardi will wait until the club returns home before deciding when Posada will play in the Yankees' key weekend series against the Boston Red Sox.
"He's sore, limping a little bit, but there's no break," Girardi said after New York's 3-2 win over the Angels on Wednesday. "We'll check to see how he is Friday. Whenever he's ready, we'll put him back in there, but I don't want this to linger. I want to clear it up."
Posada played the entire game Tuesday despite fouling the ball off himself in the fifth inning of New York's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The Yankees sent him for X-rays on Wednesday morning after his foot developed a bruise, but they were negative.
Posada is batting .283 with 22 homers and 79 RBIs in a strong comeback season for the 38-year-old catcher. Jose Molina took his starting spot on the day after New York clinched a playoff berth.
Girardi intends to make sure his players are rested for a playoff run. He swapped CC Sabathia and Joba Chamberlain in his starting rotation for the Yankees' next two games, moving Sabathia's start to Saturday so the 18-game winner can have another day of rest.
Outfielder Nick Swisher also sat out Wednesday after fouling a ball off himself Tuesday night. Alex Rodriguez got a regular day off, but grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.
The Yankees also lost utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. to an injured left wrist in the seventh inning Wednesday when he left the game midway through an at-bat. Hairston said his wrist hasn't felt right since he injured it diving for a ball earlier in the season while playing for Cincinnati, and he couldn't continue after feeling a sharp pain.
"The last three weeks or so, it just felt very weird," said Hairston, who had a cortisone shot last week. "Today I just felt a little pop in there."
Hairston will have an MRI exam Thursday in New York, and Girardi will know the results before the weekend series with Boston.
Hairston was batting .281 with two homers and 10 RBIs while playing four positions in 18 starts for the Yankees before going 0 for 2 against the Angels. New York acquired him from the Reds on July 31.
