Jamie Moyer hopes to pitch in the majors in 2012, but for this season, the 48-year-old left-hander will lend his expertise and serve as an analyst for ESPN's "Baseball Tonight." He will make his debut Thursday for Major League Baseball's Opening Day.
Moyer had Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow in December. He was pitching in the Dominican Republic in winter ball when he was injured Nov. 6, his third start, after missing the second half of the 2010 season with an injury.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to work at ESPN," Moyer said in a statement. "It's a new challenge and I look forward to this forum as a chance to elaborate on the art of pitching as I rehab from injury this season. I hope to get back on the diamond in the future."
Moyer spent the past four-plus seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and is currently a free agent. Last season, he left his July 20 start in St. Louis when he strained his left elbow after making a pitch and did not appear for the Phillies again.
Moyer is 267-204 with a 4.24 ERA during a 24-year major league career with the Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.
He has made 30 or more starts in a season 11 times and has reached double figures in wins 15 times, including four of the past five seasons.
His 2,045 strikeouts and 4,020 1/3 innings were the most among active pitchers at the conclusion of last season. He was a two-time 20-game winner with the Mariners (2001, 2003).
