DENVER -- The San Diego Padres designated veteran infielder Jorge Cantu for assignment after their 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
Cantu, who started 21 games at first base and nine at third base, was hitting .194 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 144 at-bats. He did not get into the game Wednesday.
"This is a business and this can happen," Cantu said. "I couldn't get things going. I couldn't deliver."
The Padres will make a roster move on Friday.
