Well before Mariano Rivera came from Panama to pitch for the Yankees, there was Rod Carew. An exceptional left-handed contact hitter, Carew won seven American League batting titles, hitting a career-high .388 in 1977 to win the AL MVP award. He was selected to 18 consecutive All-Star teams and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.
