What happens when you get trounced?
By David Schoenfield ESPN.com
If you're a Cleveland fan, it was a glorious day. If you're a Seattle fan, it brought back memories of Mike Parrott and Mario Mendoza.
But what does Cleveland's 17-2 rout mean? What will happen Sunday?
We checked all postseason games won by 10 runs or more, just to see if there's any "demoralizing" factor when you get your lunch handed to you.
There have been 27 previous such games. The last time it occured was last year. The A's beat the Yankees 11-1 in Game 4 to send their Division Series back to Oakland for Game 5. The Yankees were so demoralized they scored six runs in the top of the first and held on for a 7-5 victory.
Moral of the story? Don't pitch Gil Heredia.
OK, maybe there can be such a thing as momentum. Heck, ask Cleveland. In 1999, the Red Sox humiliated the Indians 23-7 in Game 4 of the Division Series and then won 12-8 in Game 5 (when Pedro Martinez pitched six innings of no-hit relief).
Of course, Cleveland had trounced Boston 11-1 in Game 2 of that series.
In the 1968 World Series, the Tigers beat the Cardinals 13-1 in Game 6. And then beat Bob Gibson in Game 7. One for the Big Mo.
In 1960, the Yankees beat the Pirates in three demoralizing games: 16-3, 10-0, 12-0. But the Pirates won the other four.
Oh, we're confused. The complete tally of the 27 games:
The team that won the game by 10 or more went 15-7 in the following game (five of the games were series clinchers.)
That means the team that lost went 7-15 in the following game.
The team that won the blowout game eventually won the series 16 times. So, 11 times they didn't. (Of course, that's counting the 1960 Yankees three times).
Anyway, here is the list of games:
