Pitch Schilling? Users split on their thoughts

ESPN.com

Pitching Curt Schilling on three-days rest for Game 4 of the World Series has sparked plenty of controversy. We asked for your opinion -- and you responded:

I most definitely would pitch Curt Schilling in Game 4. You try not to give the Yankees any chance of winning this. If they beat Schilling, then the chances are they would have beaten whoever you threw out there that night. But a 90-percent Schilling is better than anyone else the Diamondbacks could throw right now.

This could go down as one of the biggest bonehead decisions ever made. If Brenly really had confidence in his team he would pitch his two best pitchers on ample rest believing that they could get the job done. This is a classic example of playing not to lose rather than playing to win.

To not start Schilling in Game 4 would be suicide. The fact is (and the stats back it up) that the Diamondbacks have no viable pitchers besides Schilling and (Randy) Johnson.

Though Arizona is still in control of the Series, pitching Schilling on short rest makes (the Diamondbacks) look desperate. Sure, Arizona may be favored tonight, but if the Yankees are able to squeak out a win, it not only gives them more life, but all of the momentum swings to their side. If Arizona pitched Batista, even if they lost, they would still be in control, with Schilling and Johnson pitching two of the three remaining games, and having two of the three games at home. They are putting it all on the line in Game 4.

Not a chance. It makes absolutely no sense. You have to win four games. That's it. Why not put each of those guys out two times each at full strength and let them try and do only what they've done all season, and that's dominate.

You don't win the World Series by being conservative. Case in point, Bobby Cox and the Braves. It's a win-win situation for Brenly. If Schilling gets shelled early, he can still pitch Game 7. If the D-Backs are way ahead early, you can pull him after 80 pitches and still use him in Game 7. Against the Yankees, you have to go for the jugular.

A chance to go up 3-1 in the series? Damn straight I'm throwing my ace.

As a lifelong Yankees fan, I love the fact that Schilling is going out there on short rest. If Schill is off by just a hair, the Yankees can win this game, tie the series and then send Mussina out against Miguel Batista in Game 5.

You can't let the Yankees back in the series after taking the first two games. If you do, momentum switches sides, game over, series over!

When you look back on your life, you usually regret things that you didn't do, not things that you did. Pitch him.

There's a place for managing by the gut, but people who ignore the numbers usually fail. I would rest Schilling another day. The D-Backs could easily win with Batista pitching, and they wouldn't be dead if they lost. Now if the Yanks beat Schilling, the Series is over.
Bill Myers
Chicago, Ill.

Absolutely not! It's a sign of panic and an implicit admission that this series could go seven games. This is certainly not a vote of confidence for your team.

Curt has proven himself throughout the playoffs. If he says he can go on three days rest, who are we to judge, he's the one with the 0.79 ERA.

The only people who don't think Schilling should start Game 4 are Yankee fans.
John Coscia

If you ask me as a Yankee fan, I am excited to see Schilling go in Game 4. In order to win this series, we are going to have to beat him at some point. As good as Schilling is (and he will pitch a good game 4) I'd rather take my chances with him on three-days rest than his normal four.
Jason Bracco

Its not the physical stuff, its the mental stuff. Schilling is the only guy in the today's big leagues who has the mental stuff needed to pitch three World Series games. He is the most mentally tough pitcher since Bob Gibson.

The decision to start Schilling in Game 4 has just secured another Broadway celebration for the Bronx Bombers.
