Taking can out of Canada: Cups only in Jays upper deck after ALDS fiasco

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays have banned selling beer cans in the upper deck at the American League Championship Series after fans threw them on the field during a ruckus earlier in the playoffs.

The vice president of stadium operations and security at Rogers Centre said beer will be poured into plastic cups starting Monday night at Game 3 between Toronto and the Kansas City Royals. Blue Jays executive Mario Coutinho said the team reserves the right to cut off beer sales after the fifth inning if there are any problems.

Some Toronto fans reacted to a ruling on a bizarre play in the deciding Game 5 of the AL Division Series against Texas last week by pelting the field with cans.

Coutinho said the Blue Jays did an assessment of the situation with police and then talked it over with Major League Baseball. He wouldn't say how many Toronto police officers would be at Monday's game but said the number was "fairly high."
