Dipping into the mailbag

Yeah, we all know that Russ Branyan strikes out a lot, but come on! The Tribe goes 6-0 for the week, and all they get is the jump from 13th to 10th? What about the resurgence of Marty Cordova? And C.C. Sabathia? Juan Gonzalez is putting up Manny-like numbers? Help me out, here.

Dan Parker
Columbus, Ohio

Giants 3rd! Are you crazy? Of the 12 teams with winning records, every single one of them has a positive run differential, except the Giants, who have given up 11 more then they have scored. Seven of those 12 teams have a better record then the Giants too. Around 10th in the rankings would be much more suitable.

Cleveland

“ The Twins in the top 5 ... I never thought I would see this day ... I think I'm having a he..a..rt attttackkk! ”
—  Chad Mostrom, New Brighton, Minn.

It's good to see the Cubs moving up, but how can you have the Phillies one spot higher than them? Both teams have the same record, the Cubs have won four out of six against the Phillies and yet they're ranked below them. I don't get it.

Rob Kurczewski
Detroit

By no stretch of the imagination do I believe the Orioles are a good team. However, I think that their ranking is based on what they are expected to do this year rather than how they are currently playing. There are several teams ranked well ahead of them that are playing far worse. If the rankings are supposed to measure potential, than they should never change. I assume that you had your preseason rankings based on the potential of each team. However, if this is to be an on-going benchmark of where the teams currently stand, I think the O's should be in the low 20s and teams like the A's should be lower. When they win, move them up.

Stephen J. Marchesani
Laurel, Md.

The Indians have outscored their opponents by 20 runs. The Giants have been outscored by 11. So why is San Francisco ranked seven spots ahead of the Tribe?

Jeremy Weiss
Falls Church, Va.

It seems that you've permanently damned the Devil Rays to 30th. However, if the Tigers lose two of three to the Rays in Detroit this weekend, I think that you should get my sad, sad team out of the last spot for next week. I simply can't imagine that the Devil Rays are worse than the Tigers. It pains me to admit that I'm a fan.

Doug Evans
Charlottesville, Va.

It's not Al Leiter's fault that the Mets are doing so poorly. He's pitched well, but the Mets' inept offense will keep them from winning this year. Hey, Steve Phillips it's now time to get Sheff in here.

Michael Silva
Oklahoma City, Okla.

“ Maybe you should have reserved your comment about the Cubs' pitching staff until after they played at Coors Field. ”
—  Jessica Schneider, Washington, D.C.

Are you guys under new management? The rankings actually seem to have some rational thought behind them this week.

Jim Sullivan
East Rutherford, N.J.

Rock on Mariners. Pitching, defense and timely hitting ... pitching, defense and timely hitting ... pitching, defense and timely hitting ... pitching, defense and timely hitting ...

Justin Pedersen
Renton, Wash.

The A's have dropped 24 spots in three weeks. Now that has to be some kind of Power Alley record I would have to believe.

Karl McLaughlin
Anchorage, Alaska
