Became the first player in major-league history to make All-Star teams as a catcher (1991) and as a second baseman ... Ranked seventh in the NL with 96 runs, 10th with 38 steals and fourth with 94 walks ... Was the fourth-toughest player in the league to double up, hitting into only five double plays in 613 at-bats (once every 122.6 at-bats) ... Joined teammates Jeff Bagwell and Steve Finley as the only NL players to appear in all 162 games, a feat matched in the AL by only Cal Ripken, Jr. ... Hit safely in 14 of 16 games to open the season (.381, 24-63) and finished April with a .313 mark ... Led the club in batting for the second straight season (.295) and became the first Astros catcher ever named to the All-Star Team ... Opened the year with a 10-game hitting streak (.475, 19-40) ... Finished April with a .359 batting average and did not hit under .270 in a month all season ... Took a .315 average to the All-Star Game in Toronto, where he went 0-for-1 but entered the record book by committing the first catcher's interference in All-Star history ... Hit into only two double plays in 546 at-bats, the best ratio in the majors ... Stole a career-high three bases on Sept. 27 vs. Atlanta ... Led the Astros and tied for sixth in the NL (with Will Clark of San Francisco) with 48 multiple-hit games ... Played second base for the first time in his career on Sept. 30 at San Francisco ... Led league catchers in putouts (889), total chances (963) and passed balls (13).

1990
Power numbers dwindled, but he became the first catcher ever to lead Houston in batting (.276) ... Also led the team in at-bats, hits and doubles, while stealing 25 bases, at that time a career high ... Had hits in six consecutive plate appearances April 14 and 15 to anchor a NL Player of the Week, .400 (12-30) performance ... Had a team-best hitting streak of 10 games July 19-27 to go with twin nine and eight-game streaks ... Led Houston with 38 multi-hit games ... 113 of his appearances came behind the plate and 50 came in the outfield.

1989
Won the Silver Slugger award as the NL's top offensive catcher in his first full season in the majors ... Led all major league catchers with 21 stolen bases and was second among NL backstops with 13 homers and 60 RBI ... Named to UPI's post-season NL All-Star Team ... Was successful on his first 15 stolen base attempts, a streak that lasted until Aug. 1 ... Put together a career-best 12-game hitting streak May 26-June 9, batting .391 (18-46) with seven doubles, two homers and 12 RBI ... Named NL Player of the Week when he batted .476 (10-21) July 24-31.

1988
Became the first non-pitcher drafted in 1987 to make the major leagues when Houston purchased his contract from Tucson (AAA) on June 26 ... First hit came off Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser June 29 ... Hit his first big-league homer off veteran reliever Rich 'Goose' Gossage to beat on Chicago Aug. 22.
