1998 Season
Bob Tewksbury's 1998 was a carbon copy of 1997. He pitched very well when healthy early in the year but was hurt by poor run support. He missed time in May, July and August with a sore shoulder, and wasn't as effective after getting hurt. The Twins considered trading him to a contender, but questions about his health prevented a deal.
Pitching & Defense
When healthy, Tewksbury is still one of the best control pitchers in the major leagues. His fastball averages 84 MPH, but he's adept at changing speeds to make it appear quicker than it really is. His curveball, slider and changeup are all solid, though his breaking stuff flattens out when his shoulder acts up. When that happens, he gets beat. Tewksbury is less mobile than most of the Minnesota pitchers, and his slow delivery can be a problem if there's speed on the bases.
1999 Outlook
The Twins like Tewksbury and appreciate his influence on the younger pitchers. A free agent, he won't stay in Minnesota because he wants to pitch for a team closer to his New Hampshire home. The wily veteran probably has another year or two left in his arm and would make a good fifth starter for a contender.
