Olympic team: Where are they now? ESPN.com | |||||||||||||||||
| Doug Mientkiewicz has become a household name with his hot start. Here's where the rest of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic baseball team is and how they're doing this season (stats through May 14, includes only players who played in the Olympic tournament):
Brent Abernathy, 2B .237, 1 HR, 7 RBI in 23 games for AAA Durham (Devil Rays) Traded from Toronto to Tampa Bay for Steve Trachsel on July 31 last year, Abernathy was expected to win Tampa's starting second-base job in spring training. But he struggled in the spring and hasn't hit in Triple-A. Kurt Ainsworth, RHP 1-3, 8.42 ERA, 36.1 IP in eight starts for AAA Fresno (Giants) Considered one the minors top pitching prospects, Ainsworth won both his Olympic starts but has been hammered in Triple-A so far. Pat Borders, C .202, 0 HR, 9 RBI in 27 games for AAA Durham (Devil Rays) The veteran catcher is an insurance policy in Triple-A. Sean Burroughs, 3B .320, 0 HR, 7 RBI in 18 games for AAA Portland (Padres) Just 20, Burroughs may be the top pure hitter in the minors. He hit just two homers in Double-A last year, but scouts expect his power to develop. John Cotton, UT .200, 1 HR, 9 RBI in 30 games for AAA Nashville (Pirates) Veteran minor leaguer still seeks first major-league callup. Travis Dawkins, SS .213, 0 HR, 5 RBI in 17 games for AA Chattanooga (Reds) Once expected to be the replacement for Barry Larkin, Dawkins has struggled to hit at the upper levels of the minors. Adam Everett, SS .237, 2 HR, 10 RBI in 30 games for AAA New Orleans (Astros) His glove is ready for the big leagues, but he needs to prove he can hit. Ryan Franklin, RHP 2-1, 3.00 ERA, 24.0 IP in 10 appearances for Seattle Franklin won three games in relief during the Olympics and the longtime Mariner farmhand finally made the big leagues. He's pitched well in a long relief role, showing great control. Chris George, LHP 2-1, 3.05 ERA, 38.1 IP in seven starts for AAA Omaha (Royals) Compared to Tom Glavine, George could reach the big-league rotation sometime during the season. Shane Heams, RHP 2-0, 3.48 ERA, 20.2 IP in 15 appearances for AA Erie (Tigers) Originally an outfielder in the Mariners system, Heams retired before turning to pitching and signing with the Tigers in 1998. He should eventually help out in the bullpen. Mike Kinkade, 3B .246, 1 HR, 4 RBI in 20 GP for Baltimore Kinkade is playing some third base for the Orioles. Rick Krivda, LHP 1-2, 2.29 ERA, 19.2 IP in three starts for AAA Memphis (Cardinals) The veteran lefty is having another good year in Triple-A. Doug Meintkiewicz, 1B .410, 8 HR, 29 RBI, .709 Slg. Pct. in 25 games for Minnesota Mientkiewicz, who hit the game-winning homer in the ninth inning in a semifinal win over South Korea, has been the MVP for the surprising Twins. Mike Neill, OF .261, 3 HR, 11 RBI in 27 games for AAA Pawtucket (Red Sox) Neill left the Mariners to sign with the Red Sox in the offseason, where he awaits some injuries to get a callup. Roy Oswalt, RHP 1-0, 1.79 ERA, 5.2 IP in three appearances for Houston One of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Oswalt recently joined the Astros' bullpen. Jon Rauch, RHP 1-3, 5.79 ERA, 29 IP in six starts for AAA Charlotte (White Sox) Baseball America's minor league player of the year hasn't put it together yet in Triple-A. Anthony Sanders, OF .176, 0 HR, 2 RBI in 17 games played for Seattle Began the year with the Mariners before getting his contract sold to the Japanese leagues. Bobby Seay, LHP 0-3, 6.00 ERA, 24.0 IP in six starts for AA Orlando (Devil Rays) Went 8-7, 3.88 in Double-A last year, but a return there has him off to a slow start. Ben Sheets, RHP 4-2, 2.82 ERA, 38.1 IP in six starts for Milwaukee Sheets beat Cuba with a three-hit shutout in the Gold Medal game and he's lived up to the big expectations thus far. Brad Wilkerson, OF .214, 1 HR, 2 RBI in four games for AAA Ottawa (Expos) Wilkerson has just recently returned from offseason shoulder surgery. He should be in the Expos outfield in 2002. Todd Williams, RHP 1-0, 2.61 ERA, 10 SO, 10.1 IP in 13 appearances for the Yankees Signed by the Yankees in the offseason as a minor-league free agent (from Seattle), Williams has pitched well. Ernie Young, OF .234, 3 HR, 12 RBI in 29 games for AAA Portland (Padres) Better than some guys in the majors. Tim Young, LHP Released by the Red Sox in December and is now playing in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. |
