AL boxscore | AL play-by-play | NL boxscore | NL play-by-play Editor's note: ESPN.com and ESPN VideoGames teamed up to bring you the first All-Stars vs. All-Star Snubs doubleheader. American League and National League team lineups were selected by ESPN.com editors and entered into the ESPN VideoGames database. The computer produced a simulated game complete with box scores, play-by-play and highlights. The results were surprising. One note of interest is that Jason Giambi played for the AL All-Star Snub team despite being named an AL All-Star after replacing the injured Mike Sweeney. Also, Dontrelle Willis played for the NL All-Star Snub team despite being named an NL All-Star after replacing the injured Kevin Brown. CYBERSPACE (ESPN.com) -- The Snubs weren't just software scrubs, after all. The National League Snubs, led by Jeff Kent's sixth-inning grand slam off Kerry Wood, defeated the NL Stars 5-4 in the opener of Friday's doubleheader.
Kent was named the game's MVP (Most Valuable Pixel), taking home a 2003 Yamaha V-Star Classic motorcycle that goes with the honor. In the AL nightcap, the 'dissed just missed making it Snub sweep. Stars DH Edgar Martinez smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning off David Wells, but it was his speed that sealed the 4-2 victory over the Stars. AL Snub Troy Percival walked Carlos Delgado, Manny Ramirez and Martinez to start the eight. Delgado was forced at home after Normar Garciaparra ground into a double play, leaving Ramirez at third and Martinez at second. Percival appeared to get out of the inning, inducing Ramon Hernandez to hit the ball to Derek Jeter that should have ended the threat. Jeter, however, was out of position playing second base, a Snub sub for Michael Young. The Yankees' shortstop who missed much of the first half with a separated shoulder couldn't make the play and allowed Ramirez and Martinez, thanks to computer regenerated hammys, to score the go-ahead runs. Martinez earned AL MVP honors in his final All-Star appearance, opting instead for a 2003 Hoveround motorscooter to take into retirement. Eddie Guardado survived a shaky ninth to nail down the victory for the AL Stars, getting AL Snubs Jason Giambi and Rafael Palmiero to both fly out with two aboard. Mike MacDougal earned the win. In the NL opener, Snub starter Dontrelle Willis pitcher two perfect innings. Hideo Nomo was the winner with Tim Worrell picking up the save. Chipper Jones went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the NL Snubs. |
