Marlins ship reliever Steve Cishek to Double-A 'out of the spotlight'

The Miami Marlins optioned right-hander Steve Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville on Monday night, two weeks after the right-hander lost the closer's job.

Cishek was 1-5 with a 6.98 ERA in 19 games this season, his fifth in the majors.

"We want to take him out of the spotlight of the major leagues and let him work on some mechanical things," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said after Monday night's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

The Marlins had removed Cishek as the closer and said they would "mix and match" at the end of games until they could determine a more permanent option.

Cishek had led MLB with four blown saves after faltering in back-to-back games. He had just three saves after totaling 73 over the previous two seasons.
