Mike Pelfrey agrees to 2-year deal with Tigers, pending physical

The Detroit Tigers have reached an agreement on a two-year, $16 million contract with free agent right-hander Mike Pelfrey, pending completion of a physical exam, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com Friday.

Pelfrey, 31, is 61-81 with a 4.52 ERA over parts of 10 big-league seasons with the New York Mets and Minnesota Twins. The Mets chose him as the ninth overall pick in the 2005 draft out of Wichita State.

The Tigers plan to have Pelfrey slide into the fourth spot in their rotation behind Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Jordan Zimmermann, who signed a five-year, $110 million contract last week.

The Tigers expect Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd and Shane Greene to compete for the fifth starting spot in spring training.
