Bat dog upstages Alex Rodriguez in minor league game

Meet the Trenton Thunder bat dog, Derby (0:39)

Here's a look at Derby, the bat dog for the Yankees' Double-A affiliate Trenton Thunder, and the shout-out Alex Rodriguez gives him on social media. (0:39)

Alex Rodriguez was supposed to return to the New York Yankees' lineup earlier this week, but instead, he ending up playing two games for the Double-A Trenton Thunder while rehabbing a hamstring injury. Maybe he just wanted to spend some time with Derby, one of the team's bat dogs.

Before Wednesday's game, Rodriguez posted a picture of him with Derby on social media. That photo was from his previous rehab stint with Trenton in 2013. Maybe that post gave him a little bit of good luck, as he homered in his final at-bat before returning to the Bronx for Thursday's game.

Derby is actually a second-generation bat dog. His dad, Chase, was the Thunder's bat dog from 2002 until his death in 2013. And Derby's son, Rookie, currently works games with his dad as well. Last year, E:60 chronicled the story of the Thunder's bat dogs.
