ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Umpire Jeff Kellogg was forced out of Saturday night's game between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels after taking a foul tip flush off the facemask in the bottom of the second inning.
Kellogg needed a couple of minutes to make it back to his feet after being hit by the foul ball off the bat of Torii Hunter. Kellogg was checked by Angels head trainer Adam Nevala before being accompanied to the umpires' dressing room.
Kellogg has been diagnosed initially with a headache and will continue to be monitored. He has not been taken to a hospital.
Detroit starter Justin Verlander had to wait until the plate area was cleared before taking some warmup pitches, and first base umpire Tim Timmons took over behind the plate for his crew chief.
Kellogg is in his 21st season in the majors and has worked four World Series.
Timmons got some heat from Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera after a called strike in the fourth, and Cabrera grounded into a double play on the next pitch before Prince Fielder struck out swinging. Moments later, Timmons ejected Cabrera for saying something from the dugout -- then tossed third base coach Gene Lamont after he and manager Jim Leyland complained to Timmons about Cabrera's ejection.
